“Magic Moments: Preliminary Materials for a Theory of the Young-Girl” explores mediated images of women and the tangled relationship that has been stitched between consumer culture and female identity. Imagery of young women appropriated from advertisements—idealized images of privileged American perfection and freedom— are paired with a slow acoustic version of the National Anthem to illuminate the distorting and obfuscating function of both.
